Portrait Artists
Portraits are a personal reflection of the subject, whether they tell a happy tale or sorrow story. Some of my favorite portraits are the ones that capture innocence with just a small bit of macabre.
Steve McCurry
He has one of the most famous National Geographic portraits to date: Afghan Girl. In 1984, McCurry took the photo of an orphaned 12 year old girl in Pakistan. Over 15 years later in 2002, her true identity was discovered with another picture taken by McCurry comparing the changes the years have done.
Annie Leibovitz
She has taken some of the most iconic celebrity photographs in history. She took the last professional portraits of John Lennon just hours before he was assassinated. One of my favorite portraits she has done is her Vogue and Vanity Fair shots. She captures each portrait in just a moment frozen in the midst of the fame and fortune.
Jimmy Nelson
He is most known for his portraits of indigenous tribes and their leaders. He captures the exquisite basic human nature of survival.
Joe McNally
McNally photographs quite extreme portraits. His portraits remind me of extreme sports or 90's alternative album covers. His Ballerina albums are some of my favorite because it resembles putting a porcelain dancer into a different environment other than a studio.
