Book Review

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dave Carnegie

This book was a roller coaster ride for me. I enjoyed it at some points and then hated it at others. Here are some of the highlights I took away from the book,  why they stuck to me, and some reasons behind why I did not like the book.
  • Positive
    • You definitely got what you put into this book. You would retain more information and understand the book more if you applied it in your daily life. For instance, this book had an interesting way of telling you not to judge another man for his actions. He explained this with his letters that Lincoln wrote and sent and the ones he never sent.
    • Just be plain nice and respectful. It is not that hard. The small section of going on about how you should deal with people was like reading a book on common sense. How else should someone be treated.
    • The way this book was written made it easier and harder to read. Easier from just how simple the content was and how it seemed you had already read the book, but harder from the format.
  • Negative
    • The format of this book was something I did not enjoy. The way the paragraphs were arranged and how each section was divided was difficult to adjust to.
    • The way it seemed to be repetitive throughout the entire book made it harder to read. I would be reading a chapter or section and the first third of it would stick and I could understand it. The next two thirds of the section or chapter felt like he was restating and rephrasing the first couple of paragraphs. This made it hard to want to read it and difficult to stay on track.
There will always be certain aspects in books, film, movies, anything that you will and will not agree with. Don't necessarily let it stop you from enjoying the whole picture. There were things in this book I did not like and agree with, but I also took away some positive attributes, and because of that I have enjoyed this book.
